New York concealed carry live fire training

How to Get Your New York Concealed Carry Permit: The 16-Hour Course Explained

Getting your concealed-carry license in New York can feel like a maze of forms, fees and requirements. One step that trips up many applicants is the state-required firearms safety training. Here is a plain-English overview of what it involves and how to prepare.

The Training Requirement

New York requires new concealed-carry / pistol-permit applicants to complete a state-mandated firearms safety course. The course combines 16 hours of classroom instruction with 2 hours of live-fire range training. The classroom portion covers safe handling, New York law, the use of deadly force, safe storage and situational awareness; the range portion confirms you can handle and fire a pistol safely and competently.

What to Expect in the Classroom

  • Firearm safety rules and safe handling
  • New York firearm law and your legal responsibilities
  • Use-of-force law and the serious responsibility of carrying
  • Safe storage at home and in transit
  • Situational awareness and conflict avoidance

The Live-Fire Portion

The two-hour range session is where you demonstrate the fundamentals under the direct supervision of a certified instructor. You do not need to be an expert — you need to be safe and coachable. A good instructor will set you up to succeed.

After the Course

You will receive documentation of completion to include with your county pistol-permit application. Requirements and processing vary by county, so always confirm the specifics with your local licensing authority.
